Sea Olympics

My contribution to my sea.

Today marked another reading and another SAS tradition, Sea Olympics. Actually, I guess it started last night with opening ceremonies. Opening ceremonies were funny, all about the spirit of competition and having fun. It could have been cheesy, and some people would probably say it was, but I still had a lot of fun. Everyone sat with their seas and cheered and the day before, my sea paraded through the top three decks with our banner and cheers. Each deck is divided into seas, and they all have their own color and captains for the Olympics. It's essentially spirit week, which we never got to do in high school so I was pretty excited. Plus, the Caribbean Sea's color was orange, and thanks to UVA, I already have a bunch of orange shirts, saving me $15!

Sea Olympics are a series of competitions between the ten seas, and everyone is competing to get off the ship first when we finally dock in San Diego. The competitions were things like dodgeball, crab soccer, tug-a-war, three legged race, dress up your LLC, trivia, synchronized swimming, wheel barrel race, card tower making, and hula-hoop. I'm probably forgetting about some too. During sign ups, everything filled up crazy fast so all I got were alternate spots for the three legged race and wheel barrel race, but yesterday, my LLC told me my roommate dropped out of synchronized swimming (which apparently he didn't want to do in the first place and was forced to do it) so she asked me if I wanted to step in. Not having any event to do and always in the mood for an adventure, I said yes. Most people bailed out so that night at midnight, the few of us left were not in good shape. The girls who were supposed to choreograph it weren't really listening to anyone and it took an hour just to get a song figured out. All of us guys were getting kind of bored of not doing anything and having people arguing so we eventually decided just to improv it and do a game of chicken in the pool to the 007 theme (sounded like a good idea last night). Today, 15 minutes before the event, one girl dropped out, one girl didn't show up, and my roommate, who was back in it, dropped out again. This just left me and Steven, which was not enough to participate since we needed groups of 3-6. Thankfully, our LLC, Alissa, (sort of the adult in charge of your sea who just wanted everyone to have a good time) agreed to do it. We made a routine in five minutes, where Steven and I were the good guys, and Alyssa was a bad guy trying to kill us. This was all set to the 007 theme and there was some kind of shoot out in the water. The crowd laughed and we all had fun. We got 24 points and the winning team, who practiced a lot, got 35. Most other teams got around 27 so we didn't' do too bad considering. Most other seas had routines that were a mix of funny and sexual dances all set to music. Someone has a video that I will post when I get it and get good internet.

That was the only event I was in. I wanted to be in the three legged race because my whole extended family was in it, but my sea said they had enough people who had practiced. My sea was disqualified from the event because their rope broke so at least I wasn't involved in that.

I spent the rest of the day just watching various events and eating the amazing BBQ dinner. Ultimately, the Red Sea won (a real underdog story), followed by the Aegean Sea and Baltic Sea in second and third. I was glad they didn't win because they all got way into it and were way too loud. If they won, we'd never hear the end of it.

Now it's just class, and then GHANA ON SUNDAY!
